Box Springs and Other Special Mattress Springs
Box springs are a very specialized segement of the spring making industry. Spring manufacturers that make this product must have specialized equipment for just this purpose. It can be a significant investment.
This product is also called bed springs or mattress springs. All these refer to wire springs assembled together in a cloth covered frame. The springs in the assembly can be either compression springs or torsion springs. Why do we even have these? Why not just use a mattress? Well, when you think about it, there are some reasons... - It raises the mattress's height and makes it easier to get in and out of bed
- It absorbs the shock of jumping into bed. Therefore, reducing the wear to that expensive mattress
- It helps create a perfectly flat and firm base for the mattress
Some beds do not need these, but most traditional frame or four poster beds require one.The manufacture of box springs is not done on standard spring making machines. These machines are highly specialized. Here is a video showing a bed spring spring coiler. This machine combines coiling, knotting (on the end coils, see the next video for what this is), and heat treatment. It is highly mechanized. Here is what we mean by knotting. Here is a video of another spring coiler. This one is not at all like the one in the first video. This is strictly mechanical. No extra automation. This machine is mainly used for coiling the double-cone shaped springs for soft furniture such as mattresses and sofas. This mattress spring machine actually coils the spring right into a pocket, seals the pocket, and transfers them away. So, how do they put all these springs together into one box spring? Well, I found this a very interesting machine. I'm not talking about the hand assembling of the springs. I'm talking about the machine making the corkscrew spring. Check it out: And then there is this slightly more automatic method: Here's another view of the same operation:
