Center Hinge

by Paul Adams
(Seattle)

This is a diagram of what I call a center hinge. Their are 2 aluminum tubes that pivot on this hinge, 1 each on the holes in the middle of the hinge. When the tubes are in the vertical position, they are closed. When the tubes move into the horizontal position the tubes are in the open position. I have been trying to invent and design a spring loaded mechanism that will hold the tubes in the horizontal position.

The 2 holes at the ends of the hinge are for the first design I have, which is a double round button spring lock. The kind you would find on a telescoping pole that you push with your thumb and nobody likes because it hurts like hell most of the time!

My dilemma is to find a better way! Something that "clicks" and firmly secures the tubes in the horizontal position and can be released with minimal effort, actions and of course pain.

I have included a diagram of the center hinge and a video of the hinge in motion.
