Constant Force Springs

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Constant force springs are a type of spiral spring made from strip material. They function, in most cases, like an extension wire spring.

constant force spring

This spring is made of strip material formed in a spiral. Each turn (or coil) of strip material wraps tightly on itself. When it is in use the free end is pulled out and the load is built up by the inner coils on the ID pulling on the free end.

Obviously, by its design, this spring is capable of either a very long or short extension. In operation the spring provides a constant load at a zero rate. In other words it can have a long stroke with no load build up.

It is ideally suited for counter-balances or any other application that needs a constant pressure. One example would be the constant pressure needed on carbon brushes in electrical apparatus.

In application the load can be multiplied by using two or more springs in tandem or in a laminated pattern.
