full elipitcal spring
I have an antique car from 1910. It has full elliptical springs. The ends on the main spring is designed so that a bolt or pin goes through it making a type of hinge to connect the top arch to the bottom on each end. Basically it looks as though they took 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick washers and mounted them to the side of the spings. Then the other arch has an eyelet. On the spring with the washers or what might be called a hanger end the flat spring was curved and washers were welded. I am sure these were forged 100 years ago. I need advice on making the end with the washers since I am being told you cannot weld spring steel with any reliability. Can anyone advise me on what to do. Lastly, where can you find tapered leafs.
