Garage Door Springs
Garage door springs are really not a spring type, but instead a spring use. They are coil springs that help to lift and lower garage doors.
A garage door that has these properly installed and adjusted needs to be manually opened only a foot or two before the springs take over. The springs do the actual work of lifting and lowering, even with automatic garage door openers.
These springs are either torsion springs or extension springs. You can go to this page to get more infomation on torsion springs-

Extension Springs: How they are designed and used
A roll-away garage door uses two torsion springs that are located on either side of the top center of the door. Swing-up garage doors use two extension springs, mounted on extending swing-arms on either side of the door.
These springs are under tremendous tension when extended. It is imperative to keep all the parts of the garage door assembly maintained. A failed spring can cause tremendous physical damage and possible bodily harm.
Routine safety checks would be a good idea. Corrosion, loose hardware or worn parts can lead to accidents. A misadjusted spring will make the garage door difficult to open, or just the opposite. It could just fly up out of control.
The design of the springs is dependent on the weight of the door. Doors can weigh as much as 400 pounds. The length of the spring will also depend on the size of the door. Selecting the right garage door springs is the key ingredient for the door to work properly, safely and easily.
Here is an interesting website for garage door spring design
that has taken various torsion spring applications and created programs for door calculations. Downloadable demos are available for free!
Don't try to change these springs yourself!. This should be done only by experienced technicians. It is very easy to lose control of the spring or a cable under tension. You could suffer great bodily harm, or worse.
Local home improvement centers stock various sizes of these springs. Many also provide a service to install them for you. You can also find neighborhood businesses that sell and install these springs. Let them do it for you.
