Need high strength wire

by Dan
(United States)

What spring wire materials are available, if any, that surpass music wire (ASTM A228) with respect to fatigue and strength? I currently have a high cycle (up to 1e9 cycles) compression spring application that is resulting in occasional spring breakage, some of which has been attributed to seams and some not.

High Tensile Music Wire
by: Rick III

There isn't an American spec by which the High Tensile Music Wire goes for. However, you can obtain SWP-B, which is High Tensile per the Japanese spec. There is also EN 10270-1 DH, which is the High Tensile Music Wire per the German spec.

Rick, do you have any specifics on your recommendation? How does "high tensile music wire" differ from ASTM A228 music wire I'm already using?
