Trying to make .125 piano wire 'springs"

by John Gaertner
(Keswick, VA, USA)

Hello, I am trying to make small quantities (less than 100) of old fashion wire ferrules. These are round compression springs that, after being wound, are squished to an oval shape under a 20 ton press. The problem is I am unable to wind the springs. The wire I am using is 0.125" Marlin piano wire. and the ID of the spring has to be rather small, .312". My mandrels that I wind the wire around keeps breaking. The finished springs only have to be about 8 winds long. But this is very hard to do!

Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

CASE HARDEN

YOU HAVE TO USE A CASE HARDEN MANDREL (LIKE A DOWEL PIN) THIS MEANS THAT YOU MANDREL IS GOING TO HAVE A HARD SURFACE (OUTSIDE) AND A SOFT INSIDE. THIS WILL ADD STRANGHT TO YOUR MANDREL AND WILL KEEP IT FROM WEARING. MAKE SURE YOU USE A SUPPORT ON THE END OF THE MANDREL SO IT WONT BRAKE. BY THE WAY HOW LONG IS YOUR SPRING? RESORTERO2@YAHOO.COM
